Lake Mburo National Park
Of all the 10 Ugandan National Parks Lake Mburo is the most conveniently located close to the highway that connects Kampala to the parks of western Uganda in Kiruhura district approx. 4 hours’ drive. It is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks covering 370 square kilometres of land and underlain by ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks that date back more than 500 million years. Lake Mburo forms part of a 50 km-long wetland system linked by a swamp and 5 of the Lakes lying within the Park’s borders.
Lake Mburo National Park is home to 350 bird species as well as zebras, impalas, elands, buffalos, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi, and reedbuck. The Park is the best place to view acacia-associated birds, Rwonyo is a good zone to see the mosque swallow, black-bellied bustard, bare-faced-go away bird, and Ruppel’s starling.
20% of the park’s entrance fee is used to fund local community projects such as building clinics and schools. Activities include game drives, port fishing, bird watching, nature walks, horse riding, quad biking, cultural experiences, and boat cruises.
